Finding Colors

This is another painting of Tuscany, where I will be teaching a workshop next September. The challenge in this piece, as with many landscapes, is to take what is essentially mostly green and find the colors. What made this piece tricky is that by mistake I left all my paints at home and didn't realize it till I got to my studio, all set to work. I was not driving back. So I scrounged up three trusty tubes of paint, (plus white), and managed to coax out all the colors in this piece. There is much to be said for working with a limited palette - cheaper and less schelpping!

It's amazing what you can do with a limited palette. Really nice piece Patti.

That is so cool! You nailed those colors and with such a limited palette. I love this post. Glad to see other artists forget something when "on the go"!

hey thanks you guys. One of the best things about the good 'ol limited palette is instant color harmony - it sure makes life easier

Love it! So, what were the colors you found laying around?

Hey Tonya, here are the three colors that are always in my studio : phthalo blue (green shade) Cad yellow light, Quinacridone Magenta - and white. they are great for keeping things simple. i go back and forth between using only a few colors and laying out a bigger palette. sometimes using more colors is more fun, but it takes so long to get the painting process going...
