Yesterday I was hired to do a 2 hour painting demo at a local art supply store, A.I Friedman. I had a little audience and we chatted thru most of the demo, which is both good, (because it takes the pressure off), and sometimes a little distracting too. Sometimes when carrying on an ongoing conversation, I forget to squint, and then have to go back and make adjustments to my values. This painting done in acrylics, which dry really fast and I try to avoid having to re-do passages because the texture builds up with ridges from the brushstrokes, and for this style of painting, I don't want "dried paint" texture getting in my way. As I look at it I see little things I might have done differently but, I'll think I'll just move on and say... done! Next!

I love how the green from the plate is reflected in the pith of the orange

oh so that's what does it. I recently took a sanding tool to an acrylic painting to take out some of the caking & ridges. Successful, but not for the faint of heart
Great painting--did you mix all the different shades and tints of the orange? I am so impressed especially since this is acrylic paint.
hey anne - yeah, sometimes i like texture but not for this kind of painting. sometimes when i try to sand the acrylic to get the texture down it doesn't work, so i have to just put a bunch of layers of gesso over it, that usually does the trick.
jerry - yes, i did mix those different tints of orange, and orange can be a tricky color when you try to grey it down... but overall i think it works ok. i added a lot of yellow to the orange for the brightest parts. alizarin mixed into it gives a nice clean dark orange without getting muddy.
Thanks Patii. I have been using a clear gel medium as well. Helps with the acrylic "cellulite". lol
Whenever a family member comes in and sits across from me while I'm painting and stays...I end up messing up whatever I'm working on. I do like to zone out (or in) and forget everything else. So, with all that going on around you, you did great! Love your color combo.
Magnificent clean crisp painting. I like the green plate.
Happy painting.
