I finally got my still life stand and lights functioning in the new studio. It felt great to be back at the easel, working from life, with all my creature comforts nearby. The picture below shows my acrylic corner - and on the other side of the room are my oils and mixed-media work areas. If I get stuck on one project i just move a few feet to the next. Love it!

Seems like I've been away forever, one workshop after the next - all really fun, then a trade show out west. As always, the best part of workshops is meeting new artists and making new friends.
I am finally home - for one day - then back on the road to see my folks for Thanksgiving. Wishing everyone a wonderful holiday.

I've never been good at drawing from imagination. But when your model moves, or worse yet, implodes in front of you, there's not much you can do but work from memory. That was the case in class today. One of my students brought in the most stunning of pastries, real show stoppers. No sooner had we begun painting when one of them split down the middle and began to bleed - chocolate, oozing from the middle cavity (the pastry, not the student). OK, we can deal with this, I thought, and gave my students a "show must go on" pep talk. Soon after, it was as if someone had removed its skeleton... and splat, flat, yuk. I was kicking myself for not doing a sketch first - I had no drawing to look at, no values, no nothing, except my feeble memory. Not a good place to be. OK, at least 'its a great exercise', if somewhat a drag, to mentally re-create this model in a younger, perkier stage of life.  We all struggled today, but at least we left class reasonably intact - more than I can say for the poor pastries that were disected, devoured and quickly put out of their misery.

Sweet Stuff

Here's a painting I started last night at 9:30 and finished at 10:45. I went out and bought all kinds of sweet things to paint, so stay tuned for a slew of paintings of desserts, ice cream, candy, cookies and all the stuff we love to eat, drink - and look at too! This is my first in the "Sweet Stuff" series. I took photos from start to finish to show the step by step progression, I'll be uploading them and posting to my website "demos" page.
