Eye Candy

Early November I spent about a week at a trade show booth which featured bowls of taffy intended to entice passersby to stop and chat. Lesson learned: no one can chat intelligibly with taffy in their mouths. Fortunately, they work perfectly as eye candy.

I love this painting! At first, I assumed it was acrylic, because you are well-known for your acrylics. I like to look at your acrylic paintings for inspiration that acrylics can be used to create great, beautiful, loose, painterly paintings. But, then I noticed this one was done in oils. I know you paint with both mediums. In what ways would this painting have been the same and different if painted with acrylics? Thanks!

I adore this - a clever design with beautiful colors. I love the importance of the licorice jelly bean

Thanks for the comments - this was sorta challenging (especially the clear wrappers) and the composition was elusive. I kept moving the little candies around until it had some sort of design. Those little licorice jelly beans were key players! glad you like it :-)

Christi - thats a great question. I do paint in both mediums and often feel that if a subject requires a lot of nuance, oils is the way to go. Plus with acrylics I work with bigger brushes and don't have more than an hour or two before they start to "tack up" and get sticky. Since this was more challenging to get the small shapes and forms to read properly, i figured there would be a lot of back and forth otherwise known as scraping off. So I gave myself the flexibility of oils. But you have peaked my interest... I'm wondering how it would have turned out in acrylics ... hmmm, maybe I'll try that sometime and see what happens...?

I just love this blog. Not only are your paintings incredible, but your stories and writing are delightful. The image of folks standing around eating taffy while trying to schmooze at a trade show cracks me up! You are a true inspiration. That would make a great holiday card!

hey nancy, it was the worlds dumbest choice for booth candy. no sooner would i pop a taffy into my mouth when someone would approach and do the same... DUH! thanks for your nice comments - one great thing about the blog age is that i no longer feel a tree falling in the woods, or one hand clapping, or whatever that analogy is when your not sure if you exist if no one notices you. at least we are all connected seeing what we all are up to, and getting inspired by each other. Its really cool. Knowing that others will see our work ups the ante to do our best.. . its all good! BTW love your blog too, Nancy. You are tops at getting those values ... perfecto.

Oh my gosh! I LOVE this Patti! Just fabulous in every way - composition, colors, brush strokes. I know it was difficult with all those wrappers but you nailed them all. Fabulous!
